Roermond and its surroundings

Roermond (- Remunj)

The city of Roermond , or ‘Remunj’ in the local dialect, lies in the heart of the province of Limburg, right at the point where its namesake, the Roer river, flows into one of the main waterways of the Netherlands, the Maas.
Lying right on one such waterway it naturally has a long and rich history as a trade city, eventually being associated with the Hanseatic League.
The charm of Roermond doesn’t end at its history however, from experiencing the wonderful natural environment to treating yourself (oneself) at the Designer Outlet, there’s plenty of reason why Roermond has gained immense popularity as a weekend get-away destination.

Culinary

Roermond has a vast array of wonderful restaurants and we are happy to help you select the perfect fit for your culinary desires.

Water sports
The Maas, Roer and Maasplassen offer a great number of ways to enjoy the water, in whichever way you like. These options range from a leisurely boat tour to an exciting afternoon of windsurfing or canoeing and so much more, most of which can be booked at the harbours or banks of the Maasplassen.

Nature
Less than a few kilometres from our city centre (,) you can find yourself surrounded by nature’s glory in National Park De Meinweg, made up of forests, heaths and fens.
The National Park can be explored both on foot or by bicycle and outside of a small selection of protected areas, is the whole area available for exploration. For a longer visit to De Meinweg we recommend Boshotel Vlodrop.

City walk through Roermond
Get to know the 800 year old history of Roermond by taking a scenic walk through its  gorgeous city centre, where you will find traditional homes, monasteries, chapels and churches. Via the VVV of Midden-Limburg or www.hartvanlimburg.nl/en you will find additional information to plan your city walk.

Children
There’s fun for the whole family in and around Roermond, think of activities such as:
- The Maasplassen for a day on or around the water
- Playground Kitskenberg
- Boshotel Vlodrop for activities in and around De Meinweg
- Visitors centre De Meinweg and Brasserie De Boshut in Herkenbosch
- Indoor playground Peewee in Posterholt
- Amusement park Toverland, near Venlo

For day-trips slightly further away from  Roermond we would recommend: Maastricht (30 minutes’ drive away), Düsseldorf (45 minutes’ drive away), Aachen (1 hour drive away), Maaseik (25 minutes’ drive away) and the White City (of) Thorn (20 minutes’ drive away).
